Big Brother
About this Artwork
The work transforms the concept of “Big Brother” into an object that evokes the physical presence of an observer. Big Brother is not simply a figure, but a sensation – the feeling that something interacts with you without your awareness or control. It is immobile and seemingly artificial, yet it dominates from above: an entity with which dialogue is impossible, one that cannot be negotiated with. It forms its own conclusions and makes its own decisions about us. Like the ‚Äúfourth wall‚Äù in theater ‚Äî lifeless and constructed ‚Äî it conceals a spectator for whom you become an object of interest.
The object becomes an intervention and invites viewers to ask: At what point does freedom become controlled by someone else? What does freedom mean today? The work overlays the urban environment with a symbolic structure of power. The eye interrupts the neutrality of architecture and exposes the invisible systems operating behind it.
When the viewer switches to the front-facing camera, the object attaches itself to the user´s face through tracking, transforming the viewer into the very observer they are confronted with. In that moment, we ourselves become the “Big Brother” watching the world through the same gaze that once watched us. Perhaps the observer emerges from within us ‚Äî a product of our own nature and our desire to observe and control.”
