Detritus of Innocence
About this Artwork
In 1990, a violent storm in the North Pacific ripped open the cargo of a container ship, releasing nearly 29,000 rubber ducks and bath toys into the sea. What seemed like a quirky accident quickly revealed itself as an ecological alarm. The ducks don’t sink or dissolve; they drift for decades, riding currents across the world and washing ashore on North America, Australia, Europe, and even the Arctic Circle. As oceanographers map the plastics invasion and environmentalists sound the alarm, marine life is suffering in real time.
